Tomatoes are great vegetables that you can not only pamper in the greenhouse, but also grow on a flower pot, or even in a pot on the balcony. You can have a nice harvest on the loggia in the block of flats. Lately it is also very popular growing in bags laid on pallets. According to all horticultural lessons, seedlings should be planted only after Frozen Men. Then the frosts are only sporadic, and delicate plants are not in such danger.
You can choose a variety of species depending on size, color and shape. These times, stick tomatoes are especially popular, but they need a field. For growing in the soil you need a sunny place. Be careful not to have potatoes there before, as there is a risk of transmission of mold. Deepen the well to which add a little ripe compost. At the same time, next to the pin or other support. Then insert the seedlings and oversert a little. Pour in, completely cover and attach to the support.
The pot must have a drain
If you decide to grow tomatoes in a classic container, remember that they must have drain holes, so that water does not accumulate at the roots. They could then die. Others are for self-irrigation pots, in which tomatoes thrive quite well. This way you have much less to worry about watering, even if you are going for a whole weekend cottage or even a week's vacation. For growing in containers and bags, get a quality substrate. Another option is a thick plastic bag, which, however, do not forget to cut off the corner to make it drain. Even in containers and bags, support is important for rod species. If you take good care of the tomatoes and you have enough sun on the balcony, you may have a bigger crop than on the garden. On the balcony, seedlings are definitely not arranged by hungry slugs.
Beware of watering
On hot days it is necessary to guard tomatoes in containers and bags. They have little substrate around them, so they are at risk of overheating and lysis. It is best to plan the dressing for the morning, when you are sure that by the evening the spilled leaves will dry out. Water needs to be directed to the roots, never on a leaf. Moist leaves will increase the risk of mold formation, and in addition, a drop under the sun's ray is like a magnifying glass. The sun can burn the leaves. Rainwater is best for watering, of course. But if you don't have it, let it stand overnight.
Especially plants in containers or bags have a limited supply of nutrients. And weakened tomatoes are harder to prevent diseases and pests. In a limited amount of substrate, nutrients are exhausted very quickly. What to watch out for?
– You should fertilize regularly, otherwise there is a risk that the fruits will not ripe. It's not a disease, it's just missing important elements.
– When potassium is missing, the place around the fetal stem does not color, so in yellow fruits it remains green and in red yellow.
– When calcium is missing, the lower part of the surfaces dyes and a round spot forms there.
– Magnesium deficiency, in turn, signals when the lower edges of the leaves wither and yellowish spots appear on them.
During the season you can fertilize, for example, with Kristalon, Organo-mineral fertilizer Agro, Pokon, Substral or Forestinou. For bar varieties, do not forget to tip the shoots. Preferably by hand when they are still soft and fresh.
